The origins of the Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía (PTA) in Malaga date back to 1988, year in which the Junta de Andalucía (Andalusian regional government) and the Malaga City Hall signed an agreement to create a science park in Malaga.

Four years later, in December 1992, the Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía, located in the district of Campanillas, in the city of Malaga, was officially inaugurated.

In September 1995 an agreement was signed with the International Association of Science Parks (IASP) to set up its world headquarters at the Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía.

Since 1998 the Park also houses the headquarters of the Association of Science Parks of Spain (Asociación de Parques Científicos y Tecnológicos de España - APTE).

Originally, the Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía was conceived as a technological nucleus to stimulate industry in Andalusia. This mission was to be of a qualitative nature, with the park acting as the support for diverse functions, including the generation of scientific and technological knowledge, the implementation of industrial activities and top quality services to enable the application and experimentation of new technologies, and finally, the creation of structures providing technological and training services for enterprises and institutions. All of this makes the Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía a scientific, cultural and leisure environment which produces synergies and facilitates "cross fertilisation" amongst the different agents of innovation.
