Málaga Advances in the Development of Computing and Quantum Technologies with New Infrastructure

  • The University of Málaga to host an ORIGIN WUKONG quantum computer from Quantum Labs

The University of Málaga, through its UMA innTech Office, has signed today a collaboration agreement with Quantum Labs to install an ORIGIN WUKONG 317-qubit quantum computer at the institution’s Supercomputing and Bioinformatics Centre (SCBI). This milestone will position Málaga on the European map of quantum computing and at the forefront of knowledge in this field.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Rector of the University of Málaga, Teodomiro López; the Vice-Rector for Technological Innovation and Strategic Projects, Javier López; and the President of Quantum Labs, Javier Romero. Also present were the Regional Government of Andalusia’s Minister for Industry, Energy and Mines, Jorge Paradela, and the Managing Director of the Andalusian Digital Agency, Raúl Jiménez, as part of a coordinated initiative to foster quantum technologies in the region.

The agreement sets out the conditions for the installation and operation of an advanced quantum system based on superconducting technology, developed by ORIGIN, which will be housed at the University of Málaga’s SCBI facilities at Málaga TechPark. This initiative strengthens the scientific and technological capabilities of Málaga’s innovation ecosystem in a strategic area for the development of emerging technologies.

The system features an ultra-low vibration design and advanced quantum control and measurement technologies. It requires highly specialised technical infrastructure, including cryogenic cooling systems and an estimated power consumption of up to 80 kW. Quantum Labs will be responsible for refurbishing the space, as well as installing, operating, and maintaining the equipment.

The University of Málaga will provide the necessary facilities for the system’s installation at SCBI, as well as access and institutional support for the development of related activities.

The launch of this infrastructure will enable progress in new lines of research in computing and quantum technologies and their applications in areas such as artificial intelligence, photonics, cybersecurity, programming and simulation of complex systems, and computing chemistry, while also fostering collaboration with the scientific and technological community.

The event was also attended by the Vice-Rector for Research and Scientific Outreach, along with researchers from the University of Málaga specialising in quantum technologies whose groups are part of the Quant·UMA initiative. Directors of the Schools of Industrial, Computer, and Telecommunications Engineering, as well as the Dean of the Faculty of Science, were present, reflecting the cross-disciplinary nature of the initiative.
