- Compiled by the innTech Office, INNOVA IRV, and Málaga TechPark, the catalogue highlights the work of 17 research groups from five faculties and schools
The University of Málaga (UMA) has unveiled its Catalogue of Research and Innovation Capabilities in Artificial Intelligence, an initiative led by the Office of Innovation and Technological Cooperation – UMA innTech, within the framework of the Artificial Intelligence Co-Innovation Lab, promoted in collaboration with INNOVA IRV and Málaga TechPark.
The catalogue brings together contributions from 17 research groups of five different UMA academic centers, highlighting both the high level of specialization and the cross-disciplinary nature of AI research being carried out at the university.
The participating teams represent a wide range of fields including Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, Industrial Engineering, Law, and the Humanities. They form a diverse ecosystem capable of generating innovative solutions with real impact across multiple strategic sectors.
The initiative was presented today by UMA’s rector, Teodomiro López, alongside Felipe Romera, General Director of Málaga TechPark; Javier López, Rector’s Delegate for Technological Innovation; and Toni de la Prieta, Vice President of Artificial Intelligence at INNOVA IRV.
Collaboration
All speakers emphasized the importance of university-industry collaboration. As Felipe Romera noted, “When individual potential is brought together, its impact multiplies.” This is precisely the mission of the AI Co-Innovation Lab: to foster an enabling environment and identify business opportunities.
Among the key outcomes of this collaboration between UMA, INNOVA IRV, and Málaga TechPark are the creation of the Chair in Microelectronics, UMA’s integration into AMETIC, and the production of this AI catalogue, which raises the profile of UMA’s research groups and their capacity to develop innovative AI-based solutions.
Javier López shared some impressive figures: the research groups featured in this catalogue have participated in 60 European AI projects, 169 national, 102 regional, and 43 international projects, as well as 265 contracts with companies. Over the past three years, this has resulted in €36 million in public funding and €10.6 million in private-sector contracts.
According to López, “Very few universities in Spain can match this potential. That’s why the time was right to showcase and consolidate it—to make it visible and accessible to society.”

The Catalogue of Research and Innovation Capabilities in Artificial Intelligence includes the following research groups:
- Hardware infrastructure for testing and deployment of Big Data Analytics services
• Federated Data Spaces platform (IDSA) available as a service (DSaaS) and connector as a service (CaaS)
• High-performance multi-core CPU servers
• High-performance FPGA cluster (AMD/Xilinx Alveo U55C).
• High-performance server with 32 GPUs (in procurement process)
• Supercomputing Cluster – 32 GPUs
• Home Automation Laboratory
• Mathematics and Modeling Laboratory
• 5G and LTE network
• IoT network
• Emergency network
• Open-RAN network
• NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network)
• Testbed environments for industrial control systems
• One fixed and two portable Near InfraRed Spectroscopy (NIRS) Systems
• NVIDIA RTX A6000 graphics card with 48 GB DDR6.
Purpose of the Catalogue
The catalogue’s main aim is to facilitate engagement between UMA’s AI research groups and the broader socioeconomic environment. It has been designed as a practical tool to help companies, public institutions, and organizations identify specific capabilities and establish collaborative initiatives to address shared challenges.
This process of connection and dynamization will be managed by UMA innTech, the office responsible for coordinating the laboratory and creating the catalog.
This initiative not only showcases the specialized knowledge within the University of Málaga but also creates a direct bridge between academic research and the real needs of the productive sector. Under the coordination of UMA innTech, the Artificial Intelligence Co-Innovation Lab continues to consolidate its role as a strategic platform connecting science, technology, and industry, driving the responsible, applied development of AI, boosting talent, and strengthening Málaga’s position as a hub for digital innovation in the field of artificial intelligence.
