- José Carlos Garín will work for two years at the Leuven headquarters before relocating to the Málaga institute
José Carlos Garín, a graduate of the School of Industrial Engineering at the University of Málaga, has become the first person hired by imec (Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre) Spain for its new site in Málaga.
The announcement was made by the Belgian institute, headquartered in Leuven, which plans to open a microchip design center at the Andalusian Technology Park (PTA) by 2030. Garín has been hired as a facility engineer and will spend the next two years working at imec’s main headquarters before relocating to Málaga to begin preparing the new site, which is expected to be under construction by then.
The goal of his time in Leuven is to gain knowledge of the cleanrooms already operating there, with the aim of replicating the infrastructure and operations in Málaga. He will be responsible for the engineering aspects of the facility. Garín is currently employed by General Electric (GE), working in maintenance at Naturgy’s combined-cycle power plant located in Málaga TechPark.
A few days ago, Garín visited the School of Industrial Engineering at the University of Málaga, where he shared reflections on his academic journey, professional development, and the challenges ahead in this chapter. He was welcomed by the school’s director, Joaquín Ortega, who described the visit as “especially emotional,” since it involved a former student who “after his time in the classroom, has launched a brilliant professional career that now sees him contributing to a strategic project for the city and the country’s technological advancement.”
