AMETIC awards its 8th Gold Medal to Felipe Romera, director of Malaga TechPark, for his contribution to the digital industry, linked to Science and Technology Parks

AMETIC, the Spanish digital industry employers’ association, has awarded its 8th Gold Medal to the engineer Felipe Romera, current director of Malaga TechPark and president of the Association of Science and Technology Parks of Spain (APTE), in recognition of his contribution to the Spanish digital industry throughout his extensive professional career and for doing so in an exemplary manner with a desire to build through knowledge and collaboration with the entire public and private ecosystem.

The award ceremony took place during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Throughout his professional career, Romera has successfully held positions of high responsibility in the area of innovation at national and international level, both in the private and public sector, which has made him one of the people who best knows the environment of technology and innovation in Spain. He has always stood out for his vision of the future and his ability to create collaborative and creative work ecosystems.

Since its inception in 1990, he has directed the Malaga TechPark and since 1998 he has been president of the Association of Science and Technology Parks of Spain (APTE), which encompasses 8,000 companies and organisations.

He was a member of the Advisory Council for Science and Technology of the Ministry of Science and Technology, representing APTE, between 2001 and 2004. He has also been president of the Network of Technological Spaces of Andalusia (RETA) since its constitution in April 2005, until 2015.

Recognition of effort and contribution to the sector

This AMETIC recognition rewards the contribution of great professionals to the development of the sector, but also rewards the values that these people represent, such as talent, effort, generosity and open and honest collaboration.

For this reason, Pedro Mier recognised Romera’s important contribution to the digital industry, highlighting his personal and professional values. In this sense, the president of AMETIC pointed out that “Felipe Romera’s entrepreneurial spirit is an inspiration for the entire sector and for all those who know him. His experience, his vision, his generosity, his closeness and his optimism have made Felipe a benchmark in our industry. Of his extensive career, I would like to highlight his exemplary management of the Andalusia Technology Park and, of his most recent projects, his contribution to the launch, just a few weeks ago, of the Ricardo Valle Innovation Institute Foundation, INNOVA IRV”.

A long professional career

Born in Soria, Romera holds a degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicaciones in Madrid, where he graduated in 1976.

After finishing his studies, he worked at INTELSA (Ericsson), Secoinsa and Fujitsu Spain, working in telecommunications product design. Between 1982 and 1993 he was director of the R&D Laboratory of Fujitsu Spain, located in Malaga.

At the same time, he has held and continues to hold positions in the International Association of Science and Technology Parks and Areas of Innovation (IASP).

Between 1993 and 1998 he was a member of the World Board of Directors, and between 1996 and 1998 he was Secretary General of the European Section of the IASP. Since then, and until the present day, he has been an Advisory Director of the IASP World Board of Directors.

In addition, from 1987 to 1996 he was Secretary of the Social Council of the University of Málaga. He is currently a member of the College Council of the Official College of Telecommunications Engineers (COIT) and is a member of the Board of Directors and the Reflection Group of AMETIC.
