The Minister of Economy, Finance, and European Funds of the Junta de Andalucía, and president of Málaga TechPark, Carolina España, presided over the Shareholders’ and Board of Directors General Meeting of the technopolis this Friday, where she highlighted “Málaga TechPark is experiencing a moment of success, but the best is yet to come.” A moment that “we must keep strengthening with our effort, providing this space with what makes it great and gives meaning to the Park: its companies, the investments they make, and the employment and prosperity it generates from Málaga, for all of Andalusia,” she said.

The balance of 2023 highlights the significant growth of Málaga TechPark in the past year, “which is reflected in specific numbers and very encouraging data,” stated the minister, who outlined “the combination of efforts, as a tool that guarantees success” for Málaga TechPark.

Balance of a successful 2023 for the technopolis

Málaga TechPark has ended the year 2023 with a revenue over 3.46 billion euros, representing a 24.92% increase compared to the revenue in 2022. Thus, the total turnover of Málaga TechPark since the beginning of its activity reached 38.47 billion euros.

On another note, the number of companies increased by 5% (34), reaching 687 companies based in the technopolis, with 70 of them being foreign from 21 different countries. This increase has also occurred in the total number of employees of the park, reaching 25,101 workers in 2023, 2.8% more than the previous year.

Regarding the investment in R&D by companies and institutions in the park, it increased by 12% compared to the previous year, amounting to 173 million euros, with an increase in the number of employees working in this area by 2.5%, making it a total of 2,860 people.

Moreover, in terms of investment, since its inception, the park has reached 987 million euros, with private investment representing 88% of this amount. During 2023, there was an investment of 32.5 million euros, 88% of it being private investment, 3% more than in 2022. “The Park continues to grow steadily and, we can say without any doubt that, with a solid foundation like the one it has, the best is yet to come,” pointed out España.

New companies and enclaves for the Park

Among the new companies recently established, the implantations of the General Foundation of the University of Málaga (FGUMA), which has relocated its headquarters to Málaga TechPark, and the Eurecat Foundation, the main technology center in Catalonia, stand out.

Thus, the Swiss multinational Glencore, present in more than 35 countries and with 140,000 employees worldwide, has chosen the park to locate an IT Support Center. Also, the international operator of flexible spaces IWG has chosen Málaga TechPark to locate a new office and coworking center operated by Regus, which will be operational in early 2024, thereby providing the technopolis with a new flexible space center.

The year the arrival of IMEC was forged

The president of Málaga TechPark has emphasized “the great news” of the arrival of the manufacturing and research and development (R&D) center that IMEC will install in the technopolis in Andalusia, as endorsed in the Memorandum signed by the aforementioned institution based in Leuven (Belgium), the Government of Spain, through the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function, and the Junta de Andalucía. Likewise, she has thanked the effort of the other institutions involved in the project, such as the City Council of Málaga, the University of Málaga, and the Innova Foundation, along with Málaga TechPark.

In this way, the minister has applauded the “good harmony and discreet work, which are now bearing fruit,” she said. “IMEC will be a driving force for Málaga TechPark and a fundamental booster for the economy of new technologies.”

A worldwide reference institution in the research of nanotechnology and cutting-edge semiconductors, whose establishment in Málaga TechPark is “one of the great achievements of the modern era of Andalusia, which will make us one of the great European and global references in the field of microelectronics,” recalled Carolina España.

The implementation of IMEC in Andalusia and in Málaga, will not only promote the development of the entire value chain of the semiconductor industry in Spain and Andalusia but will also generate a tractor and multiplier effect of the microelectronics ecosystem in Spain, in our Autonomous Community, and in our city.

IMEC Fab 5 expects the creation in Málaga of highly qualified jobs (direct employment). The establishment of IMEC in Málaga TechPark will take place in the first phase of the expansion of Málaga TechPark, SUP-CA.10 area. This project contemplates around 32,000 m2 of buildable area on a plot of 46,000 m2.

In short, it is a global reference in the research of nanotechnology and cutting-edge semiconductors, with 5,000 employees from 97 countries.

Málaga TechPark enclaves

Among the projects related to the park’s strategy in the city, the alliance signed between the Port of Málaga and Málaga TechPark stands out. It consists of a protocol aimed at establishing collaboration between Málaga TechPark, the Port Authority of Málaga, and the MálagaPort Foundation to achieve the development of a common collaboration model focused on the implementation of joint R&D+i projects and entrepreneurship within the port’s service area, benefiting the Port Community.

Following the signing of this binding document, both institutions are committed to creating new synergies between them, as catalysts for regional economic development and drivers of the economy and technology.

Also worthy of mention is the collaboration agreement signed with the Unicaja Foundation, which will continue to promote technological development in Málaga through the launch of a new space dedicated to the growth of entrepreneurial projects, to be housed in the Unicaja Foundation Cultural Center of Málaga.

This agreement will allow Málaga TechPark to refer startups to the Unicaja Foundation and promote the submission of business and technological projects with social utility, emerging from entrepreneurs whose activity will take place within the city of Málaga. Thus, thanks to this agreement, entrepreneurs will be able to develop their activity from a new coworking space, which will soon open its doors at the Unicaja Foundation Cultural Center of Málaga.

Simultaneously, efforts are being made with the autonomous cities of Melilla and Ceuta to host possible enclaves of the park in both cities.

“It has been a great year, and we are confident that many important and transcendent moments await us at Málaga TechPark. We hope that 2024 will be an even better year, and we will continue to strive to make Málaga TechPark the best place for the development of more innovative activities,” said Carolina España.
