Málaga Technology Park celebrates three decades as a business model for the Andalusian and Málaga economy

  • The president of the park, Carolina España, announces the official celebration at the beginning of 2023 and stresses that the PTA has been ‘a great project that has taken off and grown together with the city of Málaga’

The Málaga TechPark or Parque Tecnológico Malagueño celebrates its 30th anniversary today. It was in 1992 when the park was officially founded and ‘it has grown and taken off at the same time as the city of Málaga has,’ explains the president of the PTA, Carolina España.

The Minister of Economy, Finance and European Funds, who took office as president of the park on 5 December, announced that the official celebration of the park’s 30th anniversary will take place at the beginning of the year, ‘with an event of great importance, as this model for the economy of Málaga and Andalusia deserves.’

Carolina España recalls how thirty years ago there were only 9 companies that supported the Málaga TechPark and today it has 624 companies (66 open in 2022), 22,238 workers and a total turnover of 2,394.98 million euros. ‘Since its official inauguration three decades ago, the Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía (PTA) has not stopped growing in response to the needs of the surrounding companies that decided to locate there and the new firms that were born directly in its facilities.’

‘The Málaga TechPark plays an important role for the Andalusian economy in terms of production, GDP and job creation,’ says España, who points out that, in addition to these figures, ‘the PTA generates much more wealth and employment.’ The president refers to the recent study carried out by the park on its impact on the Andalusian and Málaga economy, which shows that the total impact of the PTA’s production amounted to 5,124.58 million euros in 2021, i.e. it had an indirect impact of 2,796 million euros in addition to the 2,324 million euros of turnover recorded in the park in that year. This figure represented 1.75% of the total Andalusian production for that year.

Likewise, concerning the province of Málaga, the impact is even greater. In terms of GDP, the contribution to the territorial total in the case of the province of Málaga is 8.65% of the total and in terms of the city of Málaga, it amounts to 21.87%.

In terms of jobs generated, the total employment impact figure for Málaga TechPark in 2021 was 57,625 jobs, which in terms of the Andalusian total is 1.81% of the regional total, and if the employment variable is taken into account, the contribution to the territorial total of the province is 9.14% of the total. In the city of Málaga, the impact reaches 22.11% of local employment.

As part of its ongoing expansion process, a tender has been launched for the construction of a building for the installation of companies in the R&D15-I+D16 plots of the Málaga TechPark extension. The tender, for which three bids have been received, is in the final stages of being awarded employing an open procedure, with a tender budget of 6,864,286.89 euros (excluding VAT) and a completion period of 16 months.
